Dogs are considered to be great companions in adventures, family trips or even just a person’s everyday life as they are not only reliable when you need them to help you emotionally, but they could also help out on chores if taught with tricks.
Before adopting a family dog to provide them with a forever home, most of the time, people look at a dog’s physical appearance to make sure that they’re healthy. Unfortunately, there are dogs that might not look as one expects, but they still have a kind heart and will surely be loyal to their owner.
This is what happened to a yellow Labrador with unusual facial features named Beaux Tox who finally had a place that he could call home.
According to an article published by Today in April 2018, animal lover Jamie Hulit was mesmerized the moment she saw a picture of the lovely dog. At the time, a friend of hers said the owners of Beaux, who was named Lucky at the time, were looking for someone who would adopt him.
Hulit didn’t hesitate and told her friend that she didn’t want to foster him, but rather give him a home for life.
Later that evening, the woman immediately went to the place where Beaux, who was 6 years old at the time, was staying to take a good look at him. Unfortunately, it wasn’t the sight she expected to see.
It was later revealed that Beaux had stayed in the backyard for over five years and his previous owners didn’t pay that much attention to him, which led to his health problems, as he was only 42 pounds and covered with fleas.
What’s worse, he also had heartworm.
Hulit also spoke with The Dodo to share more information about why Beaux looks the way he does. It was confirmed through an MRI that his unusual facial feature doesn’t affect his personality and is not life-threatening.
The reason why his face appears to be squashed is because he had little room to grow in the womb because there were six other puppies that his mom carried. Unfortunately, given his looks, the breeder had a hard time selling him so he was given away for free. He ended up in the backyard of the man where Hulit got him.
Local rescue groups tried their best to find him another home by putting him with different foster families due to the bad conditions he lived in with his first owner, but he was later returned after they failed to do so.
“At that point I didn’t care how badly he might be ill … I just didn’t want him to go into the foster system again and be returned,” Hulit added.
When she took him to the vet in order to check his medical condition, it was way worse than she expected and the vet named Dr. Jay Rydberg even told her Beaux had equal chances of surviving or not surviving.
Nevertheless, Hulit said she didn’t care and never gave up on him. Fortunately, Beaux was able to get through various medical procedures, and although he lost his hearing in his left ear due to ear mites and even had problems with his eyesight, he finally had a family that would take care of him for the rest of his life.
“He’s so full of life… and he’s just brought so much to us,” Hulit added.
